It’s a cliché. At the celebration party, I met Steven, a bright fourteen year old. He wants to be a doctor. He wants to help people in his community, because many of them are sick. What do people fall sick of, I ask? Is it in the chest, in the stomach? “We have a high rate of HIV,” he says confidently.

It's hard to overstate Richard's role in all this. He braved the understandable hostility on the day after the first protests, to find the community leaders through whom it was possible to build cross-class solidarity. A bit of a star, this lad.

These pictures might not strike you as terribly exciting. But they'll be printed out, just as the last photoessay was, and distributed in the community. For folk who've rarely had their photo taken for pleasure, this is vastly important validation.
